Having received notice that some strangers were leaving this place for 13ejar, carrying information and communications to the rebel colonists respecting the slate of the forces and the measures which they had observed to be taken here, and this being manifest treason as well as most culpable ingratitude, after the hospitable manner in which they have been received here, the general-in-chief of the division of operations against Goliad, Don Jose Urrea, gave orders that their motions should be watched. Two of them, one of whom proves lo be a step-son of yours, having been surprised in the act of departure, took refuge in your house, and the soldiers in pursuit placed sentinels and adopted the other precautious generally observed in such cases in order ,to prevent the evasion of the suspected persons; but these proceedings, which were indispensable, in no way violate the security of your house and person, or the. considerations due to your ·character as consul, which I will always sec maintained in obedience to the prescriptions of international law. Your house, therefore, remains as before, and you will, l hope, be convinced that this occurrence has been caused by the circumstances above related.
