does not or if personal & party feelings & dessersions prevail - all is lost. There are 5 or 6 things which are in any opinion indissputably necessary to be done & done promptly by the next convention. 1st The unqualified declaration. 2nd They should immediately publish how many more volunteers are wanted. A belief that no more are needed & that there wiU be no more fighting keeps thousands from volunteering. 3rd They should put a stop to grants of Leagues or 1/4 leagues of land to immigrants or anybody else. I find that the premium of a mile 3 quarters of land is considered bountiful & will attract as many as leagues & on the league principle we will not have 12 months hence a foot of public land worth taking up. 4th The Convention should in my opinion issue land certificates for 160, 320 & 640 acres each. I believe that these certificates could be sold for one dollar per acre & that enough could he sold to raise all the funds we will need. 5th I conceive a bank undispensible? I mean a bank founded on the pledged real estate of individual stock⢠holders. The government should not own stock nor be in any way connected except to see the banking transactions honorably conducted. I have now given you my views with as much explanation as health & time will permit. There will be no French War. France & the U. States have accepted the mediation of England. Van Buren will certainly be the next president. This · legislature wiU not instruct their Senators in Congress to vote for Mr. Blanton's resolutions to expunge Class Condemnation of the President. Col. Bob Armstrong is anxious to come to Texas. Do write him.
Yours truly, Wm. H. Wharton
