[2066) [JAMESON to SMITH)
Bexar February ] l th 1836
To His Excellency Henry Smith Dear Sir
I have been in the field on actual duly more than four Months and have not lost one hour from duly on account of sickness nor pleasure. But have served my country in every capacity I possibly could. when I left home it was with a determination lo see Texas free & Independent sink or swim die or perish. And I have sanguine hopes of seeing my determination consumated. There is still a powerful force al Rio Grande say 2000 certain the last accounts we have is that they were prepareing Ferry Boals lo cross the River lo march against us we know not when they may come. We are badly prepared to mecl them. Though we will do the best we can. A great number of the volunteers here will leave to morrow as the end of their second month is up and no pay no clothes nor no provisions-poor encouragement for patriotic men who have stood by their Country in the hour of trial. S7 each for 4 months We are now one hundred and fifty strong Col Crockett & Col Travis both here & Col Bowie in command of the volunteer forces. Col Neill left to day for home on account of an express from his family informing him of their ill health. There was great regret at his departure by all of the men though he promised to be with us in 20 days al furtherest We have nominated two delegates from the Army to represent us in the Convention which I hope will be received as we were not allowed the privilege of voting here they are both staunch Independence men & damn any other than such. I have some improved demonstrations to make & send you of our Fortress whereby fewer men & less Artillery will be required in case of a seigc or an attack. Politics arc all strait here and every man in the Army your friend. I have named to Gen! Houston through col Neill & others that l would like a permanent appointment in the Engineer corps. And know that my country will reward me as I may merit Your vcrry Respectfully G. 13. Jameson
