Occurences of an unpleasant nature took place a few clays since between Ira Ingram and myself he having by llliberal observations, made Indirect Insinuations about my public acts slating that the council was supposed to be Bribed and when pressed to know If I was Included he said Gcnl Houston said it was thought so and stated it as a rumour. Genl among the people now I have not heard it from any other Quarter except such as emenated from the same Ira and, I gave it publicly the Lie denying your having ever published any thing lo reproach my public acts. This I was Induced to do from our universally friendly [illegible] and I could not suppose you would make use of such Very unfriendly observations behind my Back which we were holding correspond- ence of a friendly character I wish you to write me particularly on this subject. Relative to the lale unfortunate occurences I had no hand in producing them and I think the must have been Brought about by designing News Caricrs. Thal as a Body the Council acted univisely and Indeed suffered feeling to get the Better of their Judgment 1 am satisfied But I deny il most solemly as relates to any of my votes being Governed by Prejudice to any Individual I was unforlunalely caught in the Council when the Broad Dissinuations now made against them and could not then retreat l never was so supprised in my life when the Governors Message was read and To
