To Col. Barrett Dear Sir:
I have this moment and at the instant the bearer was leaving town learned that a peLition is being sent to the Gov. for the purpose of getting a new trial and change of venue or pardon of James Boyce found guilty of a most corrupt and wanton murder. It is shocking lo see to what extent party feeling and party discipline can go. This man Boyce is a great buUy, always insulting, always armed with heavy pistols. Within the last three months he has several times drawn a pistol and not one month since he shot al a man in this town, hurl him in the hand as the pistol was knocked aside. He has now murdered a man with a wife and children. They have rights, the community has righLs and it must be a delicate point for a Gov. Lo pardon a man found guilty by his peers who heard and knew all the circumstances. If such things pass unnoticed, if such criminals are turned loose upon a community no person is safe who opposes that organized desperate set that have formed a league to assist each other and give protection under all circumstances, righ l or wrong. Three men have been killed by that party two shot and wounded and another desperately cut with a knife, and without cause. Boyce is a man of no business or properly, a curse and a
