The trial you know must be allendcd lo before the convention and unless I do remain they will be without a Secretary or have one who can he of no service. Under all the circumslances I have thought it my duty to forgo my own private interest for the present to be of some service to the public for which my reward will probably he kicks & curses, which is the reward of public officers in Texas generally. I hesitated sometime before corning to this determination, fearing that it would enterferc with your arrangements - but have finally yielded - and hope that my failure will not he any serious injury Lo yourself. Col. Barrells heallh is very poor so much so that it is somewhat doubtful whether he will be able to allcnd before the convention So far as 1 have heard the next convention will by no means
