spring. Flying rumors have been sent in to delude us, by saying many of the Eastern Stales have declared in opposition lo the dictator. In this, however, I have no confidence, believing it is intending to delude us. Copano has been assigned as our headquarters for the present, until we make a declaration and have a sufficient number of men and means lo operate on, when we will immediately remove to the west, of which you will be informed from this department. I depend much on our aid from the United Stales. To them I look, for they come to sustain us on honest principles alone, for which I confidently hope they will be amply rewarded. Let me hear from yourself and Mr. Hall (to whom you will please show this) officially and privately.... (To William Bryan New Orleans l [2026) (TARLETON to ROBINSON] Respectfully, Henry Smith Governor

Dr. Sir Private
I am truly sorry to inform you that we have progressed no farther westward but my Dr. Sir indeed we have done our best. The direct road here was represented lo be impassable and therefore we took a circuitous rout which detained us say one day's ride. In addition it became necessary to employ a guide to place us in the right road again and now we are here my horse lillerally broke downe and cannot carry me one mile furhter, Wallace's not much better tho' I think with care & kind treatment he would succeed in thaking him to camp. Under this impression I have been teazing him & McIntire lo proceed with the documents leaving me to join them the best way I can. Capt Wallace is writing you on another subject and therefore I will conclude with a word or [l I wo for yor private ear on another matter The lb] earer (McCloud) is our Express from Johnson's Camp, he you will find, him a Warm frd lo J. & G.t & others, 1 have only to say a word lo the wise is sufficient. He is communicative as you will find & much may be obtained from him
