[19911 [HANKS to GOVERNOR and COUNCILJ

Nacogdoches-2nd February 1836.

Govr. & Council Gent.

I sit down for the first time to give you a correct detail of what 1 have seen & IP.amt in relation to the affairs & situation of that portion of Texas, in which I have been since I left San Felipe de Austin. The people, I saw & conversed with along & on the road to this place did not attach any blame to the Council for deposing Smith-those persons that did not approve of it seemed indifferent and careless about it. The citi:1.ens of Nacogdoshcs thinks it was a most ridiculos and outrageous affair to write such a message. Genl S F. Austin has written a letter to Thos J Rusk from New Orleans dated the 18th of January, in which he states that from all accounts received from Mexico the Federal party has joined Santana to invade Texas and exterminate the "rebels" as they call them. Genl Austin therefore urges the Texans to make a Declaration of Independence on the first of March next,-by the Convention, and hopes that there will be no division on the sub- ject-He says further it is the only hope left-for the people of the U. States wish & expect it-and that the cause of Texas & Liberty is rapidly advancing in the U. Stales-They have negotiated a loan of $200,000 for Texas provided the next convention approves of it-which will be done as a matter of course. They arc also about obtaining a loan of $50,000----Mr. W. F. Gray one of the Stockholders in the loan of 200,000$ is now in this place-he is a Virginian & a Gent.---- There is a company of Volunteers (some 40) in full uni- form from Cincinati who leaves this place for the seat of war this morning-There was considerable excitement as regards the elec- tion on yesterday as to the right of the co. of volunteers exercising the right of suffrage but after warm harrangues &c they were permitted to vote & every thing has settled down quietly-Col T J Rusk will gel a much larger vole for the Convention than any one else-I think Rusk, Taylor, Roberts & Allen will he elected from this municipality.
