(1902] (BARRETT ET AL to ROBINSON]

Council Hall, San Felipe de Austin January 24th 1836-

The advisory committee to the executive, appointed by the general council, to aid in absence of a quorum of that body-have read with pleasure the foregoing propositions suggested by Hugh Love Esqr, as submitted by the Acting Governor. The patriotic spirit manifested by Mr Love, is only equalled by the evident advantages to our suffering country, which must be the conseā€¢ quence of adopting his plans,-with such modifications, however as the situation of the Government renders necessary By an ordinance of the Provisional Govt these persons were, required to treat with the Northern Indians, as commissioners with particular instructions-under this ordinance, the appointment of commissioners has been made,-& cannot be increased, but, we arc of opinion that Mr Love should be appointed an agent of the government, for executing the plan of engaging the Northern Indians now, in Texas, & none others, for protecting our Northern & Western frontiers, against the hostile tribes, & maurading parties of Mexicans-and that this should be done upon the best terms possible for the govt and in no event to place them as soldiers on better terms than our own men. They should be under the command of the Govt agent, who commission should accord with the station and duties-The Govt should be held responsible for no acts, other than embraced in the instructions from the Govr to whom all reports should be madc,-The Indians should furnish their own arms, but draw the necessary ammunition, & provisions from Govt The agent should be entitled to a place in the counsels of our Indian commissioners, who should be advised thereof, & required to aid in arranging and giving effect to the enterprise-Full powers, & instructions should be given by the Govt to the agent, Mr Love, for executing this great object of protection to our defenseless frontier-
