Anna was a short lime since at San Louis Porto see with 5 to 6000 troups and advancing upon us. Let him come, he shall be wellcome. l hope we will give a Good account of him in our report to the world and l hope that the common enemy making his appearance upon our frontier will dispel all little diversions among us. Great anxiety is manifested by all to hear from you and your success, and I look forward to the day when we shall again meet in our country where a grealful people will reward you individually and collective- ly for your private virtues and public services. My friend

I recd your of the 17th Instant to day by my friend Gritton. Permit me in the first place to introduce to your attention my friend Capt Ward one of the brave and patriotic Greys from N. Orleans Capt Ward carries the mark of the part he acted, you will find him a fine gentleman & a brave man but this you will soon discover, and any attention you may show him will be thankfully recd by your friend. You will no doubt be surprised to find my letter dated in Gonzales. I am here and have my family also here. I did not wish to pass again into the hands of Centra)jsts now was I willing to leave my family in their power for which reason I have brought them here and tomorrow I go with Mrs. Gritton to San Antonio there to remain untill times is a little settled. I will answer yours from San Antonio as I am much hurried here only been here one day. My family is all well and send their respects to you whilst 1 remain yours truly &c. John W. Smith N. B.
