War Department, January 23, 1836. Sir: I am instructed, by the President, lo request that you would repair to some proper position near the western frontier of the State of Louisiana, and there assume the personal command of all the troops of the United States who arc or may be employed in any part of the region adjoining the Mexican boundary. IL is not the object of this order lo change at all the relations between yourself and the military departments under your command, but to require your personal presence al a point where public considerations demand the exercise of great discretion and experience. An order will be issued, without delay, to the sixth regiment lo proceed lo Fort Jesup, ancl this force, together with all the troops in the western part of l.oui:-iana, and in the country west of the iVlississippi, and south or the Missouri rivers, will be employed, as occasion may rc11uirc, in carrying into etfoet the instructions herein communicalccl lo vou . .
