Head Quarters of the Army San Felipe de Austin 30th. Novr. 1835

To Capt. David Burke, Sir

I have received your muster Roll of the Detachment of Volunteers from Mobile in the U States, under your command, amounting in Rank and file to twenty-seven in number, with a tender of your services! It gives me pleasure to assure you of the acceptance of your offer in behalf of the Provisional Government of Texas. You will be entitled to all the benefits of laws, which will be enacted, or decreed, by the General Council of Texas, for the pay &c. which will be extended to all Volunteers, in proportion to term of service. You will proceed with all possible haste, and report yourself, and command to the Officer Commanding the Army of the People, before Bexar. You will receive his Orders, and render all possible aid to the cause of Texas, and Constitutional Liberty.

[HOUSTON to HITCHINSON]

San Felipe, Nov. 30th 1835 My dear Sir: By the hands of Mr. Shelby and Mr. Dameron, I had the pleasure to receive your favor of the last month. I am pleased with the young gentlemen; in one I found the son of an old friend. The young gentlemen will return for the present. By the first of March we will require aid, and efficient aid it must be. 10,000 men were ordered by Santa Anna to Texas. We can dress them with 5,000 men, and more I would not ask. We will want at least 3,000 volunteers, and more than that will be acceptable to us in our need. You will learn from the young gentlemen my views of the present crisis. You will learn that the Independence of Texas is the
