[16901 [HOUSTON to BARRETT]
Washington 2nd Jany 1836 Dear Colonel, To day I wrote to you by friend Major Hockley, and commended him to your kind notice- I have a moments leisure to write, and say that tho' one week has elapsed since my arrival here, I have not had one word of news from San Felipe. I hope Mr. Wallace is on his way and will bring me news of importance- at least a letter from you on matters and things, in general. I am myself as usual pre~ed with business; and thank God my Christmas times are over, and I am most miserably cool & sober- so you say [say] to all my friends. Instead of Egg-nog; I eat roasted Eggs in my office. There was no fuss here, on yesterday, and I trust you had none in San Felipe, for if so our country, will be ruined- the world is now looking on us, and by our fruits, we shall be judged. Union & harmony will make us every thing that we could wish to be. Di~ention will destroy Texas. I know well your feeling and your wishes- they are such as every Patriot will feel. God speed you!!! I learn from Judge Hanks that you are about to make him a sutler! I have recommended him for one- there ought to be one to each Post where tToops will be stationed. Wou'd you have thought that the judge wou'd ask my recommendation? The age of wonders is not passed- I would like to know what is going on, but I know you will guard my rights. So soon as I can proceed, and hold a Treaty with the Indians, I intend to detail a competent officer to command the Recruiting station, while I proceed to the frontier; and organize the army for a prompt movement in the Spring. Sam Houston Col D. C. Barrett [Addressed:] To Colonel D. C. Barrett San Felipe, Texas
