Gent Sam Houston Respected Sir
Yours of the 29th has just been received. It is truly discouraging to meet with so much opposition and of so violent and damning a character. Nothing since you left here has transpired within my knowledge, calculated to correct our fears. Some of the party however have been through the Country with a view no doubt to make a rally. On my own part I have no fears but am now the most secure on that account. If they do make an attempt they shall meet a warm reception, though but a single individual I feel myself a host when intruded on by such scoundrels. It would be well for you to be guarded at all points, for unprincipled men will stoop to anything. I confidently hope and believe that their end is near, their fate awaits them. I regard them for evil, and they shall not be forgotten. The cause of honesty and the people shall prevail. God will send us deliverance. Col. William Ward, Macon, George, is now here. He has tendered his services with three companies and has received the commission of Major in the auxiliary army. J have ordered him to Goliad from which place he will in clue time report himself either directly or through me to Head Quarters. Despatches from Goliad inform that the enemy is on the alert and moving towards our frontiers. I have [illegible] . The fate of Texas depends on our vigilance; let us persevere until she is freed of her internal and external enemies and quietly settled clown under a good form of Govt. We can then retire to the shade, and honorably enjoy the fruits of our labor. l have much to say to you if I had time and my mind composed. Anticipate and excuse all. I am dear Genl. Respectfully your friend & svt Henry Smith
