clothing required by a Company for the following year. The Morning reports are signed by the officer comdg. the compy. As you will see, and are consolidated daily at the adjutants office. The monthly return shows the true state of a compy. al the end of each Month. The Muster RoUs show the true situation and accounts for every Man at the end of every two months and upon which the paymaster pays; every remark relative to pay, promotions &c &c must be placed upon it. 4 of them are required in our Service, viz two given to the pay master one sent to the Adjt. Genl. at Washington and one kept by the Comdg. Officer of the Company. The Quarterly return is to show the quantity of clothing, Camp & Garrison equipage on hand at the end of each quarter. The ordence Return shows the quantity of Ordnances, ammunition &c fit for Service. Receipts RoUs are for the issuing officers. The estimate &c is required by the quarter master general in order that he may know what quantity to send to each Company. These my dear General, together with those in the Regula- tions are all the forms required. The Component parts of a Ration you will find at page 311 of the Army regulations that I sent you. My dear Sir,

I arrived at this point a day or two since with a company of 25 Men the principal part from Ky.-1 can receive no satisfactory information here, nor have we any idea of what will be our destination-May I ask your influence in procuring us service that will call us up the Country-You no doubt have some idea of a backwoodsmans hatred to the sea, my men would rather march five hundred miles by land than go fifty by sea-Can a situation as mounted Rangers be obtained for us?-Or any service that will call us from the sea coast-I have not the number will soon be made up-I have been chosen without opposition lo the command, but
