[1651] (MILLER to HOUSTON]
Nacogdoches Deer 29th 1835
Dear General
I stop a few moments here to address you last night while looking over all my papers your Instructions were carefully read but when I consider the many things I have to do as what my mind would prompt me to do for the benefit of this country I am much afraid both my zeal and wishes will fall short of what I could desire. I cannot reach my principle point for Recruiting before the 1st Febry and you know the many obstacles that will Le in my way and the delicate manner in which that service must be conducted in the U. S. the conclusion of your Instructions says to me 'much is left to your discretion' I ,vish to know whether I must report myself and command at Matagorda by the first of March or if consistent with the public service you can extend that time any further and how much. I should like to bring a respectable force into the field and you know that can not be done in 30 days and reach Matagorda I will raise the means and men if you can give me the time will you please write to me at Randolph Tipton County Ten. and extend my time as much as you possibly can consistent with the public safety. I shaU look for your answer to this ,vith much impatience. May providence keep you in safety until you are surrounded by stout hearts and good swords to protect you from Trators.
RespectfoUy W. P. Miller

To General Houston, Dr Sir
I take the privelige of addressing you this note flattering myself that you will be pleased to know our operations at this place, but I am actuated more by the uneasiness I feel about our Country from th~ cLe_claration of Dimitts party at La Bahia, & the disposition of the troops remainding at this place to second that declaration. you will excuse me therefore when I beg of you to inform me by letter the disposition of the Council & Texas in . General relative to a premature declaration of ln<lepcndcncc or an immediate declaration to that purport.
