To His Excellency Henry Smith Esq Governor of Texas, Excellent Sir,
The atitude in which the events of the war have placed me, in relation lo the community at large, as well as to that of the army in particular, renders it highly important and perhaps necessary, that I should address a few words to the Executive, on the subject of my private affairs. It is a maller of prety general notoriety, that, for many years past, I have been, to some extent, engaged, in what is commonly called, "the Mexican, interior trade." At the time the war was opened upon us, I had a considerable amount of Merchandize & Cash, in the Stale of Zacatacas. Immediately after the capture of this place, a part of my returns arrived safely-a much larger portion, however, was left behind, and is there still. A desire to withdraw this, and bring it safely in, has recently furnished the occasion for my sending hvo expresses, on my private business, to the Rio Grande. I wish this known to every branch of the government but particularly, lo the Governor & Council. I am, Sir, with great respect, Your Exy's. mo. obt. pub. sevt. P. The appointment which I have had the Hon to receive from your Hon. Body under date 20 dee. 1835, as Commissary Genl. with the Rank and pay of Col. in the line circumstances makes it obligatory upon me lo decline accepting.
