[ 1637) [HOUSTON to WYATT]
Head Quarters Washington 28th Deer 1835
To Capt P. S. Wyatt Sir,
You will proceed with your command by the best route to Copano or Refugio Mission and take the Command of that Station making such repairs at the most eligible point, covering the port, as will enable you to secure the supplies destined for that Station as well as defences so as to sustain the attack of an Enemy should you be attacked or be invested. Under no circumstances but famine will you abandon the place. You will find Capt. J. M. Allen in Command on your arrival, or if not there, you will obtain a copy of his orders and pursue the General plans given in his instructions for the occupation & defence of the Post &c. If Capt Allen is there he will tTansfer his command to you and repair to New Orleans, Recruiting "Emigrants" for Texas, and Report at Copano by the first of March next. You will make weekly reports to Head Quarters, of the state of your command; and if necessary send expresses at all times. Being in the face of an enemy or at least in command of a highly important Post on the frontier of Texas you will find it necessary to the safety of the country as well as the character of your Command, to preserve the greatest order, discipline and vi.gilence that your means will authorize.
With respect & consideration Your obt servant Sam Houston
