New Orleans Der 23, 1835

To the Govr & Council Texas Gent

By the accompanying papers you will secure the Presidets message with all the other news, we have reports thal Santa Ana is approaching Texas with an army of 6000 men, tis also reporled that the posts of Vera Cruz Tampico & Matamoras, have been shut to American Vessels, I have got some men at work making a Howitser & carriage & hope to have it done in 10 to 12 days. Men are coming in every day from various parts of the Country bound for Texas, many however are without any means. & I hope the Commissioners will soon arrive to provide some for all who are so anxious to join our cause. Mr Allens Schooner the Brutus will be ready for sea in 4 or 5 days. No commssion has yet arrived for him altho a number have been brot. to this City. Some complaints have been made, that Vessels should be commissioned to entercept the commerce between this & Mexico, and an attempt may be made to stop them but the Brutus will receive freight & passengers as other vessels and I hope will not be interrupted, Tis thought by the majorily of our friends here that an unconditional Independence will be necessary to obviate all dificulty that may otherwise arrise, and many think that Mr Whartons objections to serve as a Commissioner are well founded. Mr Childers with a donation of Five Thousand Dollars from Mr Hill of Tennessee passed thru this city 3 or 4 days since to present it to you at SanFelipe The Trial of Thompson (the Jury not being able to agree, 11 for acquitting and only 1 for convicling) will be renewed in aboul 10 days & will detain a number of Texians. I have enclosed (wilh the newspapers) the Post office Regulations & some Blanks for the Post Master General.
