Quintana 22, Dec. 1835
To the provisional Govt. of Texas
I take much pleasure in acknowledging the receipt of your adoption of the report of the commiltee to whom was refered the letters of Genl. Mexia & others. rely it releaved my feelings very much indeed. You may immagin my situation & feelings how very disagreeable when in the morning previous to receiving your instTUctions Genl Mexia had placed in my possession subject to receiving your orders the very article which you ordered me to take possession & detain. When I received your orders I was much pressed with business and had not a moment to reflect, Mexia does not know & I hope never will of the order in him as a private citizen I have not the greatest confidence, that is of his moral character, but to our cause I have abundance of evidence that he is wholy devoted & could have been-& can yet be very useful to us by uniting himself with the Gov. of Tamaulipas & other who have influence in Mexico of procuring means & preserving the credit of Texas & keeping her free from debt. we have some gentlemen however who engaged in preaching a cmsade through the country against all Mexicans & in favour of immediate declaration of independence procuring signatures of volunteers & travelers who have not been three days in the Country the Slavish printer of Brazoria does not publish anything ,vithout the permission & sanction of the ... [faded] we have finally conclusively proved I am not one of those who claims any special privileges for having lived on poor doe & layed on the ground but I realy think a few months residence should be necessary before men should be so very active & warm in pointing out to the people what cause to pursue. If we are people of ordinary intelligence such presumption is insulting to our understanding & If we have not such intelligence we do not deserve to be informed by strangers, for we would have to have a prompter at our elbows all the time or we would constantly run into error. Mexia received almost direct insult from some of our citizens, & not receiving any communication from that Govt. mortified him intensly yet he said nothing was a burthen to him in
