[1534) [JOHNSON to GOVERNOR]

Head Quarters Sn. Antonio de Bejar Deer. lSh.-1835

To His Excel. The Provisional Governor of Texas. Sir,

I have the honor to acquaint you that I have received news this day from the interior, of the Arrival of Genl. Ramires Sesima at Laredo with 500 Cavalry & 1,000 Infantry for the purpose of reinforcing Genl. Cos, to whom he has written recommending a vigorous defense, until his arrival which he asserts will be in a few days.· How for the [illegible] may affect his movements it is impossible today, but from further notices of the formation of our Army at S. Luis Potosi, to be placed under the Command of President S. Ana, it is to be feared that they have immediate intentions of proceeding to offensive measures, & every prepreation should be made on our part without dealy, as I have too much reasons to believe that the information received is as nearly as possible correct; and from the false representations of the Central- ists, that we are fighting for independence instead of Liberty & the Constitution of 1824. we may dread the junction of both the great political parties almost as much prompt means are taken to [illegible] the nation generally.- On the 16h. Inst. I addressed your Excellency by Col. Bowie relative to the Arbitrary Conduct of Captn. Dimitt, and I now beg again to draw your attention to the importance of placing a man of prudence in Command of Goliad.- Captn. Colingsworth who commanded at the taking of the place was named by General's Austin & Burlison to this charge & I have no hesitation · in recommending the propriety of his appointment. The threatened occasion renders it vitally important to place your frontier position in a state of the best profitable defense & this can only be done by having men of prudence & energy put in charge. So soon as I am advised that the Command of Goliad is in such hands, I will order an officer of some experience in Fortifications to visit the garrison & give his advice as to the Works required for immediate defense. It is of importance that some funds be remitted imm- ediately for the purchase of Corn & Cattle and for unavoidable current expenses, especially as I am now obliged to keep a party in advance on the Nueces to watch the movements of the enemy & to act as a check in case of necessity.- It will also be necessary to
