[1464) [FARRELL lo GARRETSON]
Tampico, December 13, 1835. 9 o'clock, P. M. Dear Friend-I will in as few words as possible give you intelligence of my fate, which is an untimely one. To-morrow morning before sunrise, together with 27 of my companions, we are lo be shot according to orders given to us by a court martial of Mexican soldiers or officers, for an allack on this city on the 15th of November last. I for my part am perfectly reconciled to my fate. There is no use in giving the particulars of the battle; I an pretty sure you must have heard it before; I al Lhe Lime of the engagement, received a wound in the head with a ball, and another through the right hand. I have been in the hospital until this afternoon from the morning of the battle. No money can save us-even five thousand dollars was offered for any individual-there was likewise offered one hundred thousand dollars as a ransom for all, which was refused. The reason is, they want to deter others from embracing the cause of liberty. This is a regular massacre. We should have been treated as prisoners of war. I hope the American nation will revenge our deaths. I have but a few hours more to live; so God bless you all! Farewell forever. James Farrell. To Mr. Garretson, New Orleans. P. S.-Write to my relations. You are the only one I have written to. I can say no more. (1465) [GAINES to COUNCIL)
