I have heard with pleasure of Your return from Our Army, knowing as I do the materials of which the Army is composed, I mean the insubordination, and the impossibility of keeping .up any thing like discipline, in the absence of all Law, I do think my d Sir, that You did err'd materially in the appointment of )' our Staff. You placed Men in Office that would stop, at nothing short of Your ruin etc etc The proceedings of the whole Convention proves to my mind the old adage that give Men power and they will help themselves-they have made appointments which will down the Whartons in our Section, say the appt. of L. C. Manson as 1st. Judge in our district-agst. which there will be a strong and very public remonstrance, as will many Others, known to Yrself .... Jas. P Caldwell [Addressed:] Gen! S. F. Austin San Felipe De Austin (1405) [FORSYTH to CASTILLO] Department of State, Washington, December 8, 1835. The undersigned, Secretary of State of the United States, having received and laid before the President the reports made by the district attorney al New Orleans, relative to Lhe detenLion of the vessel called the Correo de Mexico, and of certain of her officers and crew, together with Lieutenant Ocampo, has been directed to acquaint Mr. Castillo, charge d'affaires of the United Mexican Slates, in answer to his notes of the 6th and 17th of October, Lhal those persons stand committed for trial in the court of the United States for the eastern district of Louisiana during the present month, under a charge made on oath, of having maliciously attacked the schooner San Felipe, belonging Lo citizens of the United Stales, with intent unlawfully to plunder and despoil the same, contrary to the act of Congress of Lhe 3d of March, .1825; and also that Lhe Correo has been libelled under the act of Lhe 3d of March, 1819, which inflicts forfeiture of the vessel from which any piratical aggression is attempted to be made.
