the enemy advancing hut we dispirscd them with a dozen well directed canon shot when within a short distance-We look away all the ammunition we found in the fort belonging lo the Canon, spiked them and embarked the remaining forces wilhoul molestation- We were 8 days from Tampico lo this place and ever since our arrival we have been engaged in disembarking the troops arms &c-The night I arrived I wrote Mr. Viesco thinking he sLill held command and entreated him in case he was not in command to forward the same the person invested with iL-the necessity in which I found myself to receive orders to be enabled to continue our march-Above all I wrote him how important il would be that the Governor would take the trouble to meet me al Brazoria or Columbia lo confer on many subjects more particularly on the payment for the use of the Schooner- As also to provide some necessaries lo supply the troops which they are in want of and means for daily maintainance-My resources are already consumed in fitting oul the vessels, purchasing arms clothes &c-lhe liLLle I saved from the wreck I expended in purchasing provision (for the passage from Tampico to this place) from the Vessels at the bar- It is very important the Volunteers should have some attention paid them after the late fatigues, LhaL they be enabled to follow up the campaign-I must notice your Excely there is dissatisfaction among the troops, originating in my nol being able to give them the necessaries which they think themselves entitled to- I hope your Excely will excuse my lengthy narrative as the nature of the case requires it-having taken into consideration the noble object of my expedition, as also the difficult and extraordinary circumstances which have occured and at same time consider how much this handful of men have done during the last month and whose only interests have been to sustain public liberty- · I hope your Excely will dedicate a few moments to my and companions and accept of our best wishes- God and Liberty Jose Antonio Mexia Jorge Fisher Secretary [addressed:] To his Excely the Governor of Texas
