Genl. Rusk Dr. Sir
Having been absent so long from home and my business being so much damaged I have to request the favour of you to be absent from the army at least twenty days. Knowing this to be the case and being unwilling to impose the duties of my office upon another without his having the appointment conferred upon him I would respectfully ask the permission to [illegible] to you the offer which you had th~ kindness to give me upon your appointment to the office you now hold-soon after the glorious battle of San Jacinto. I do not leave the army on account of any dissatisfaction I have towards you or any person under your command-but will hold myself near as a minutes notice to march to the field the moment you may require it for the protection of the country. It is possible I may be useful al home for a while in organising a company to be also ready to take the field when called upon you may command me at any time hereafter in any service when I can be useful to the Country- Wishing you much happiness and honor in your private as well as public life lam
Very truly your friend & obt. Servl. Benj. F. Smith
