(3824] [GREEN to HOUSTON]
Head Quarters Rio Coletto July 30 th 1836.
To Majr. Gen Sam. Houston. Commander in chief of the Texas Army.
I wrote you a few days since which letter I hope you will receive in due Lime and take the hurry of this [opportunity to write] you again upon lhe starting of this express. We have stumbled upon fearful Limes I fear for Lhe liberty of Texas, not because we have not more means than ever in our hands to defend the country; but because we are kept from using them in a proper manner. The enclosed letter to the President will show you something of this-The Cahinel aUready exceedingly odious to the people of Texas for a disgraceful arrangement with Santa Ana, are withholding by a negative course of operations any assistance to Lhe Army in defending the country; and when the least move is made by the Army for so doing they cry up military usurpation, for no other purpose than to divert public odium from themselves. Upon this charge I rest perfectly content- I trust there is too much honesty and intelligence in Texas to believe that those dirty calumniators at their homes love their country more than the brave men in the army now suffering the privation of hunger nakedness and disease. I understand and with utter astonishment there are new negocialions afloat with Santa Ana-Great God, when will this childish play cease, is our national dignity and honour forever to be mocked in this disgraceful way- The Army when about 2000 strong vote<l with one solitary exception to bring Santa Ana to the Army for safe keeping & future disposition,-why it has not been done my subaltern situation does not entitle me to enquire offi- cially- I hope and trust you will order him forthwith to the Army not only for safe keeping, but that the whole operation of the Texas Government will not be absorbed and controled by Santa Ana, Sovereign will and pleasure- I hope you will not·think of sending him nearer to Lhe U.S. line.
