Steam Saw Mill San Jacinto, July 28th 1836
My dear Colonel
Volunteers are passing almost every day from the East, on their way to the army at Victoria. I have issued rations of bread stuff to them to take each of them to Columbia, or some point on the Brasos river. A part of the biscuit which was left in my charge for the above purpose was damaged and if they conlinue to come on as fast and as numerous as heretofore, I shall soon be out of bread of a quality good enough to be issued to the troops. I look for a large company of the Redlanders in a few days, and I should be, if possible in possession of a sufficiency of bread Stuffs for their supply when they arrive. I have as yet done nothing at the Mill, for the reasons, I stated to you in my last communicalion, per Luke Moore, viz: that the Individuals who are in possession of the Mexican prisoners on Buffaloe Bayou are generally unwilling to give them up. There are some exceptions, however, and I have written to the President on the subject, and have as yet received no answer or order. I have also written to him for an Engineer (Mr. Kemper) whom I left at Velasco, and who was very anxious to engage with me, but relying so firmly on Dick, (who was lilterally turned out to be an errant scoundrel) I declined his offer. I have about 60 logs, which I can saw in a week when the mill starts; and I have th promise of 100 more in two weeks. It is so important that this mill should be put into operation, that I shall strain every nerve for that desirable object. If the situation of my family permitted it, I would go to Velasco myself, and have matters so arranged, that I could carry the orders of the govt. into operation. Mrs. Macomb's desease has turned into a confirmed Consumption, attended with a dry hectic cough; she considers herself not any longer destined to remain in
