mountable difficulties - From all I see and hear I believe that altho' there is a considerable difference of senliment on the Texas question, a general impression is gaining ground in public opinion, that it must become part of the U States and that before long - how is another question - probably when Mexico finds it impossible to conquer Texas and thaL it is lost to her for ever, she may make overtures to the U. S. to purchase the Country, as such a treaty was certainly contemplated last winter at Washington - The advantages to Texas would be immense and that immediately - Texas in its present form is more endangered from other causes tha11 Mexico - the only sure ultimate protection is the United States - If such a union took place there would be a tide of emigration into Texas as has not been into any other new state - The advantages of health climate & soil have no doubt been much exaggerated for it is considered as in these respects superior to any spot in the world- Mr Green is an honest man but without any regularity or system in his conduct, and withal getting into an occasional frolic - he has a thousand Dollars \\~th him and when in liquor will tell it, which amongst such companions as he meets with may endanger his life - and as he fully intended going to Texas very shortly and like his countrymen generally, not backward in lending a hand to fight where wanted, he will no doubt be in the Army and of course in hazard of his life in Battle or by sickness - the latter most likely, as his health suffered in the first Campaign - It may therefore be desirable to guard against a loss of the property in case of his death - I wrote you that Mr Laurie has a power of Atty. with right of substitution to sell the land - he would at your request substitute this to you or any one you might designate - or he would at once make sale of it to you or any person you proposed and according to the form you might prescribe. You now know the circumstances in which I am placed and can tell what steps should be taken to make me secure. The Government of Texas may pass some law endangering the safety of Absentees property, and altho' Mr Greens absence has been involuntary and his return prevented by untoward accidents, still a wrong construction might be put upon it - and if anyLhing happens to prevent his return to Texas viz sickness or death, I might lose the property altogether - will you be so good as give these things your consideration and act for me as you see best - In the conflicting claims of Titles, which I am told is very common in Texas, some other persons might attempt to enter or survey this land - as said before, if you find it necessary to make some kind of settlement or have it surveyed I should be glad to have
