[4215) [HOUSTON Lo COSLEY]
Nacogdoches Sept 17th 1836
Capt Michael Cosley Sir
When I ordered your command to the discharge of specifick duties, I did not r.ontemplale that private interests were lo be subserved at publick expence. The object to be effected was for publick benefit, the protection of the Frontier. I regret to hear that a part of your command has been detached for the purpose of making sail for individual advantage, when our Country might require the assistance of these men in the field. You will cause your company to Le united in conformity with your first order and kept in constant vigilance; when any change is contemplated I will advise you of il until then I allow no changes in the arrangement I have made. You will conform strictly to my first & second orders until you receive further instructions. The defenses which I contemplate for that section of country will require all the exertions of your company for the present. Twenty five Cherokees will range from the Sabine to the Comanche crossing above the Saline, of the Trinity, and my object is to construct such fortifications & facilitate as Dan Parker Esq may suggest to give protection lo the Inhabitants, and if the Cherokees are pressed hard upon by the wild Indians lo give them shelter in the event of falling back. Their badge will be a white feather in the cap or head dress. You will conform strictly to the orders which you receive, and advise me from time to time of the changes necessary. You will range between the Trini Ly & Naches. You will detail ten men to effect the objects which D.
Parker Esq may have in view.
