Kaufman, August 25, 1836 J is approved, but in consideration of the recommendation of the court, and of a letter from captain Styles, praying for a remission of this penalty, so revolting to the feelings of a good soldier, and entertaining a hope that the prisoner, J. F. Kaufman, will folly redeem his character by strict subordination and a prompt discharge of his duty as a good soldier, I do hereby in exercise of the pardoning power vested in me, remit the sentence pronounced against the said Kaufman, and do return him to his duty in the line of the army.

Department of Stale, Washington, August 31, 1836. The undersigned, Secretary of State of the United States, referring to the notes addressed to the Department by Mr. Gorostiza, envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of the Mexican republic, on the 28th ultimo and 4th instant, relative to the instructions given to General Gaines for the defence of the frontier between the United States and Texas, has now the honor to transmit a copy of a letter from the President of the United States to the Governor of Tennessee, dated on the 6 instant, disapproving the requisition of General Gaines for a militia force. It is not doubted that it will be entirely satisfactory to Mr. Gorostiza and to the Mexican Government. The undersigned requests that Mr. Gorostiza will transmit to his Government a copy of the President's letter, which it is
