other hand if 1 were Gov. Smith and the elected, r would offer to General Austin, I would cheerfully accept it because I love my Country and in it l might do her good. This Gentleman being the absorbi11g influence of a patriot's breast are sufficient and I might not say more, but there are others of magnanimous and proud reflection you can appreciate them. To him who loves his nation standing and dignity what a reflection! It would be worthy of Rome's noblest Son, andbrightest day. Think! See, see how this thing would read in other nations. I ask the question, would the American Congress longer doubt about our "Capability of Self Government?" I venture not-This act as well for the acceptor as the donor would be the theme of all praise-Orators would speak it upon every court Green, and at the city places-Grave Senators would dwell upon it with delight as an example teaching themselves wisdom. The high office seekers of other nations would blush that so young a people could leach them such polil:ica1 phylosophy. The best of Pulpit Divines would shed tears over it as teaching them "brotherly love and Christian forbearance." Phylosophers would lift up their voice as an hour of Political thanksuivinu. Politicians would read in what they never could forget-A~ act°of Grecian manhood from our political infant cracUe. I myself would clap my hands and shout glory. Glory lo God in the hiuhest. Texas must be, Texas will be free. Gentl~men, 1 send each of you a copy of this letter with no unkind political feelings for either, and warm personal feelings for you both. Permit me to subscribe myself.
