The affairs of Texas connected with Genl Santa Anna as President of the Republic of Mexico have become matters of consideration to which the attention of the United States has been called, and for Texas at this moment to proceed to extreme measures relative to the merits or demerits of Santa Anna, would be treating that Government with high disrespect and I will re- spectfully add, in my opinion it would be incurring the most unfortunate responsibility for Texas, I therefore, as commander in chief of the army of the Republic do solemnly protest against the trial sentence or execution of Genl Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna- President of the Republic of Mexico until the relation in which we are to stand to the United States shall be ascertained. Conceiving it my duty to keep you properly apprised of all the important orders or operations through the orders of the Com- mander in Chief of the army I therefore forward you a copy of an order from the Comdg Genl. thro. Lieut. Col. Millard and must state to you that it is entirely out of my power to have said order carried into effect without the ad.ition of one or two officers in this Department. Qr Mr Lawrence is stationed at Galveston. Qr Mr Lee I have just ordered on an expedition to the east for the pur- pose of procuring Beeves. My object in having Wheelock appointed an Asst. was, to order him to carry this order into effect as far as possible without
