perhaps stepping aside from my duty in my department strictly speaking but some one must see lo the troops or they will soon suffer. I have however been ordered by the Comdg Gen) through Col. Millard lo lake charge of that department the order purporting lo be one from his excellency the President to Gen) Rusk granting the privilege of the commissary & ordinance department being both blended into this department-I do not however feel al liberty under existing circumstances to take charge of those departments without special directions from your honor, but if your honor should think proper to do so I shall not shrink from any duty that I can perform to forward the operations of the army or lo render them comfortable-I think I can procure a quentity of cloathing by sending an energetic agent to the eastern part of the Country. I learn that several Merchants there have large supplies of common cloathing on hand. I hope your honor will lake this maller into consideration or lay it before the cabinet to have it acted upon immediately. With high respect I have the honor lo be Sir Your ob. St. &c

To the Hon. Seely of War Dear Sir,

I have a proposition from B. S. Cole Lo sell the Govt 1500 hams at 25c p lb the proposer Lo take a dft. on Messrs T Toby of New Orleans payable in Land scrip be pleased lo instruct me whether to make the purchase or not. I have been informed that the Steam Boat Cayuga al Harrisburg is not properly allended_ to, if she belongs lo the Govt and if intended for lransporlation, direct me whether I shall have her put in repairs. It is a rnaller that properly belongs lo this department.
