Velasco, August 23, 1836. Sir: I returned a few days ago from Galveston and that neighborhood. The easternmost encl of that island is garrisoned by lhe Texans, who have hastily thrown up a mud fort and erected a few cannon. General Cos, with forty-seven other Mexican officers, and about four hundred men, have been confined lo that post since the battle of San Jacinto; the rest of theprisoners, with the exception of General Santa Anna, are dispersed among stations in this vicinity. On the 16th instant, I was present al the embarcation of the officers for Anahuac, a small town on the north side of the hay, about twcnly miles from Galveston, whither they had been ordered by the President, so as lo diminish the risk of tlw garri:::on in lhc event of a naval attack by the Mexicans.
