You speak of posts being established al different points on the Bayous above, if there is any established other than those established by this department let me know where they arc and who has charge of them &c. There will have to be a general investigation throughout this department & all things put in their proper shape soon, a few weeks will place mallers in a differenl form- Mallers are working tolerably well The government are beginning lo cooperate with the different departments and the first of Octr will bring a more healthy season to Texas, and matters of peculation will be looked into, be watchful in regard to your duty, you are under the directions of the commandant of the post as far as it regards that Command & the officer is accountable lo the Govt. for any order that he may give you, that is not compatable with the interest of the Govt. and absolutely necessary. Avoid all broils and be careful to do your duty as an officer. I approve the arrangements you have made in regard lo Messrs Wilson and Davis

Head Quarters Colello August 23, 1836

Thos B. Huling Dear Sir

I have written to you a number of tellers lately respecting our proceedings in the army in hopes that some of them would come to hand before the election a mallcr now of more vital purport to the republic than any thing else. A candidate is brought out by the cabinet & land speculation faction for president to enceavour by that means to perpetuate their powers and existan<_:e for the next 2 years and belie,-ing that they had got the man ill Stephen F. Austin. There will be nothing left undone by them to pursue their ends in fact by pledges of appointment as we are confidently told his cabinet is already arranged that Lemar will run in for ,-ice president without opposition. Wm. 1-1. Wharton for sccty.
