I have been so surrounded with company, and committees of invitation, and public business since I have reached home, that my labours are incessant, and I have not had time yet, to see the whole of my farm. I shall be with you about the first of October.

(James Johnstone, Linn's Landing, Matagorda Bay, to Louisville Daily Journal, August 17, 1836, stating in part: "Our army is well furnished with provisions. There are one hundred and fifty tons on hand at this place. There is, however, a great want of wagons and horses to convey the provisions to the army. I would advise all the emigrants, who may hereafter come from your place, to bring horses with them and to come by Red River. I would also advise them not to bring trunks. I had to send mine back to New Orleans after bringing it here. Tell all, who intend to come, to come quickly. Gen. Houston has not yet arrived. He and Col. Harrison are expected daily."]
