Dear Sir
We are much in want of a topographical engineer lo be with the Army and we have now in service a young man of talents & respectability Mr. Wm. H. Hunt whom I sent out to make some observations on the Colorado at the time it was expected that the Mexicans would soon return from the manner in which he executed Lhat work as well as the Gentlemanly deportment of the man. I know of no one better qualified than him for such an appointment. I therefore recommend him to the Cabinet and hope a commission wiU be granted him and sent out immediately. I shall dispatch him again in a few days to examine Copana & the neighborhood of San Patricio. I enclose you a copy of his report to me which I hope you will file in the War office as may be very useful in any future Campaign which may be made.
I am Sir with great respect Your obedient servant Thos. J. Rusk Brig. Gen. Comg.
