but [torn] letter and statement (nor do I doubt one word of either) leaves his son in the condition of a Deserter, not lo say anything about the receipts being genuine. I send you a copy of my letter to him. I pitied the father, was my reason for sending him a speedy answer. I said nothing about the conduct of his son. But since he has pursued such a foolish if not wicked course then it must be rightly understood. I hope you will write to me the news. There is no important news from the army. I suppose it is about 3000 strong. And it is stated that the highest office (~lexican) at Matamoros is a captain and the army does not exceed 3,000 men.
