San Augustine August 10th 1836

Dear Louis

I received you letter lo day dated May 14th slating that you was all in good health which affords me a gret pleasure as it was the first time I had heard from you since I left as their is no mail in texas I have to seand over to Fort Jessup I have been in the Texas army ever since the 30 of April & have just arrived I saw more hardships than I ever had in all my life before I had to live on Beff 6 weeks without salt I belonged to the Cavaldry & alway was the advance guard of the army after the Baltic San Jacinto we were ordered to over take the enemy under Lhe Command of Gen Philosoler we came up with him on a Stream Called Bernard in boggy Parie & Could have taken 25 mules loads of Specia & nine Cannons 300 prinors without fireing a gun we received an express not to molest them & suffered them to go without molestation The Mexican army is now at Matamoris they have made a stand & the Officers have gone on to Mexico to recruit & as fast as they come in they deserl they will be on again in the fall. The Texican army at present is upwards 2500 strong & incrasing evry day their is an expedition talked of against Matris when I left Lhe army I dont know wherther they will go or not as Gen Sam Huston is opposed to it Lamar of Georgia was appointed by the Cabinet Commander in Chief of the army he came to Headquarters & took the command & stayed one day he issured his orders & they would not obey them was left lo vote 17 was for Rusk & 170 for Lamar Houston is now at this place his wound that he recived at the Battle of San Jacinto has keep him out of the field eversince it mending very fast he will set out for head quarters in a few days the Cry in the army is Houston some of the U S troops is station in Texas for what purpose we dont know Gen Gaines say he has move some of his troops to Nacogdoches near texas where his troops is fity miles over line l understand the US acknowledge our Independence.... When I came back from the army I commenced business al the same place the people in Texas has all gone on to the army & business is verry dull at pressenl their is good prospect just ahead I look for heller times I have gaine a good deal of credit for my soldiership I had several Ofers at several places as I was
