It will a delyhtful reflection to us; and, particularly to you who pointed out the importance of our beeing thus prepared with trading craft, that from our little stock of means we had it in our power, to aid the Republic just at the very nick of time. God be praised for it. It has been suggested lo me, that we could procure houses at ports in Maine. For instance, you can contract for timber & boards, sashes &C. for a building of certain demensions & they will be prepared in every respect, ready to be put up and sent to Galveston within a given period.-Or, if you have the timber, the boards, plank, sashes & finishing materials can be procured as would not this be the best way to put up half a doz Houses this Winter? Lewis, one of the most intelegent & accomplished gentlemen that I have seen from Texas, is Still here, but will leave this to-day for N Orleans & thence via Galviton for Matagorda, his residence. I like him much, he is clear headed, so and hearted and patriotic and inthral a gentleman in manners & habits. He will talk to you of us speculators when he sees you. Our little association have stood our ground for the cause manfull, and I hope we shall not lose by it. Gil Thompson must have had a fine time of it. I cannot tell why these gentlemen look so d--d unhappy at the seccess of our cause unless their interests lay the other side of the question. T. E. Davis will make a million of Dollars out of his purchase of Thompson, at Staten Island. Yours evr. Col. Jas. Morgan Saml. Swartwout Galveston Isl
