[3897) [SHACKELFORD to MILLER]
Courtboro 6th Augt. 1836
Dear Sir
I have just rec'd yours and hasten to give you the information you desire. I knew Mr. Alfred Bynum well. We sailed from Orleans in the same vessel together and landed at the same point. He together with some eight of ten other young men from Mississippi joined the New Orleans Greys on reaching Goliad. that company was thrown on my left in the battle, and I can say we fought side by side. None was more cool, brave, or chivalrous than was my friend Bynum. After the battle we were all marched back to Goliad and I saw him frequently during the lime we remained there. As nothing has been heard of him since the massacre, he must have suffered the fate of many other gallant spirits. I deeply sympathise with his poor afflicted mother - a similar fate has taught me how to appreciate her sufferings
Yrs respectfully Jack Shackelford
