July 22 1836 to Sep 23 1836 - PTR, Vol 8

If the war should not close before then our Army will by the first of November be in possession of Matamoros and perhaps much more of the Mexican territory-We are assured that is we will carry the war into Mexico, that a large number of them will join our standard. The Liberal party who are numerous and strong will all join us. We will free them and leave them so, upon condition that they will afterwards let us be so too, independent on both sides!! The U.S. troops about 400 in number are now stationed in Nacogdoches, of course we feel perfectly secure in this section. There are no fears of an Indian war at least the force will keep them in awe. I have no douht that their will is good to fight but they are afraid lo fight Cap l. Jackson's boys, as they call them. A great many from this place are gone to the Army. Monroe Lucas, Mathey Kimbro, Levi Landy, Nathan Hawitton are all gone Rodney Anthony went too, and stayed 4 weeks, got home yesterday, hired a substitute to fill his place-I hired one for you and sent him on more than a month ago. I paid him 3 month S60. and gave him the Gov. pay excepting the land, 320 acres it will be- While I think of it I will tell you. I owe [illegible] of Shelbyvill about $200. and if you will pay him the $60. which I paid to your substitute it will answer me a better purpose than for me to have it in this place. Write me as soon as you get this and let me know. I got a large ------------ your substitute. Monroe had hired one to fill his own place for $60, and afterwards got Sl 00 in cash to go another month. Rhondy had to pay $45, after staying one month. Mathey Kimbro got $100, in cash for going too. We have very fine crops here and good health all so_ far-I should Like to see a company of volunteers from your section of country-and if you are still in the notion of m?ving to _this country; you will be glad to hear that U.S. protects tlus part of it at least, and of course you can't come too soon. Truly yours Joseph Rowe P.S. The battle of Alamo was begun 10. of Mar. 1835. [To Alpha Anthony, New Bedford, Tennessee]
