of this agency have been made out upon the plan suggested, in my former communications-refering to vouchers by numbers, I hope you will see its value. I am prepared to believe, that every effort will be made, to bring into bad odour with the Government any man who is for enforcing too rigid settlements, and accountabilities. All who suffer by the enforcement of such rules, will be discontented and will dislike the author. Every man by U1e corrupt, is presumed to have his motive for any apparantly meritorious act, and that it is for popularity; Interest or something else 1 find 1 cannot stand up against such imputations, and that my private interest is too much injured by my agency. therefore as before stated, you will consider my commission as closing on the first of July next-by which time I will endeavor to shew that I have not been entirely without some regard for Texas. I do not flinch from my duty from the fear of the complaints of interested men, but my private interest requires it. I ask only when any man ventures a complaint, that this question may be put, "Is he disinterested"-does he speak from pique-interest or patriotism-men who would fleece the Govern• ment cannot well do it while there are those who have the will and the firmness to expo~e them, consequently they must get clear of such men, as soon as possible, and therefore they must poison Lhe mind of the public and the Government against them, to accomplish which no pains will be spared. As I shall leave the office immediately, the fears of such a course towards myself weigh nothing. but you may get a successor who may make him!!elf obnoxious to certain men for those reasons, and I ven l'ure to say, unless your body is guarded, that violent efforts will he made to affect such men-no interested man, should ever he allowed to speak against another. A man known to be a good, and reasonable man, should of course always be listened to-but others may be deprived the government of their best friend-Asking pardon for stepping out of the immediate sphere of my duties and troubling the cabinet with so long a communication, I beg leave to subscribe myself Very Respy yr obt Servt.
