You wrote me that the agent for the Government of Texas would load the Kas back forthwith. These agents as you term them know the Vessel was in port. I was applied to, not by Mr, but by Capt Spillman & I refer you to him for the answe1res. After the vessel had been kept here a week or Len days relying upon these invaluable agents-there was nothing to ship, no credit, no money to buy anything with Under protest H. and the Vessel had to be sent off to the best advantage. I made no insurance on the Kus or her cargo. There was no offi,;e in the City would take the risk except, West, and lo insure at that office in my opinion is paying for a risk which you had as weU take upon yourself. That West is dishonest & will take every advantage I have not the least hesitation in saying & I believe would resist the claim unde:r any circum- stances. Capt Mason incuded me to believe that he intended to return in the vessel & repeatedly applied for money which I invaribly information to my neighbors- he informed me he would stop the Ferry in the morning and must keep my boat. But I should have it as soon as they [illegible] over to dinner was asleep [illegible] me a perogue to go home in- This is all th1e conversation I have had with them-and this prompted by apparer,L nedessity of the case. I have no clue to the movements of Gen. Houston all we could hear was that he was retreating lo the Trinity,. and my only motive the immediate reply of these [rnegible] Since this I have exerted myself aU I could to secure the property of Prest. Burnett from t_his circumstance simple as it is the most exagerate tales are told-first that l have turned Tory & joined Lhe Mexicans next that I have been robing & plundering all around the country & concealing the property- The worst of the stories is I have threatened lo be broke up & destroyed for having exerted myself to the utmost to protect the [illegible] & properly of my neighbours at a time when a band of lawless [illegible J have been ransacking the neighborhood- Now, if one cents worth of prnpcrty can be found about me which I am not fully authorised to take charge of I am willing lo be punished, otherwise I wish the right of defedning myself against the attacks of those who flew with consternation at the approach of changes. hut have now returned most flaming palocts to desolate those who dared to face the [illegible ] - My political sentiment have remained inchangcd I have [iUegi ble l myself down a strong south wind precluded the possiblity of having by waler in family council it was concluded that the best & only chance was to remain where we were- in about ~! hours it was reported that a hody of Cavalry supposed to be 1000 men had
