To Genl Thos J Rusk Dear Sir

Leuteniant William Daniel of Captain Mabbit's Company of the Municipality of San Augustine & several others here applied to me for discharges saying that they have not been sent to me as the proper officer for doing by Genl Lamar. This is something I do not understand I wish an explanation for I have yet to learn officially you have resigned the command of the Army. Whenever a proper occasion presents for me to act in my official station I hope I know my duty.

My dear children

,,, On the 7th Mr. Foley informed me that the President the day before sent an express up to Marion for Capt. Brown of the Invincible who was then laking in fresh water for a cruise & · also upon every man in the neighborhood to repair forthwith lo Matagorda there lo meet & repel the Mexicans who were reported to be landing their Vera Cruz troops. I accordingly started the next morning but when we reached there we found no enemy, of the company who left here all went on to the army except Mr. Fitchet & myself my return was owing to the children all having the houping cough & myself not very weU since my return. I have been quite sick & now so weak as to be scarcely able to write al all. Genl. Santa Ana is still under guard near Columbia & is likely to remain until our independence is recognized by the
