My Dear Friend

Your letter of the 16th. of June was received the day before yesterday. [ am most happy to hear from you and lo know that you are well nnd thus far on your way to the seal of Govt. I pray to Goel that your council may be regarded, for 1 believe it will be different from the recent disposition manifested by the cabinet and President, in relation to Santa Anna. I have never doubted about your final success, until l heard thal the Texian cabinet had resolved lo let that Brule escape, Then 1 must confess I gave up all hope. For, depend upon it, had that trick succeeded, all sympathy for Texas would have been lost, in the stales- You never could again have excited us Lo airl or avenge your cause, As it is, I fear a slain has been put upon your Escutcheon, that time alone will obliterate. Whal, in the name of God eould have induced your people Lo think of such a thing? After such u victory as that of the 21st of April, with the Brule in your power and his forces scnllcrecl to the winds, the world, in amazement would have
