[McCLOSKEY to BURNET and HOUSTON]

Bloomfield Nelson County Ky July 9th 1836

To D G. Burnett President of the Republic Texas & Genl. Saml. Houston Commander in chief of the Texian Army Gentlemen A number of the citizens of this Town and vicinity assembled here to day for the purpose of expressing and communicating to you our feelings and sentiments, in relation to the treacherous and inhuman manner in which Col. Fannin and the troops under his command were massacred by the order and directions of Santa Anna the l\'lcxican Commander. Many of those young men were from this county, our Friends and Relatives, and we believe most of them from the United Stale::., the deep distress we feel for Lhe fate of our murdered friends, we hope will be a sufficient apology for the liberty we have taken lo address you upon this occasion. We view the Texian war perfectly justifiable on the part of the Texians that they were left no other alternative than to take up their arms in defence of their most sacred rights life liberty & property or submit to injustice Oppression and Tyrany under these impressions some of our most gallant and patriotic young men took leave of their Friends and the peaceful abode of Lhcir native country for the wilds of Texas, they Rallied around the standard of your country determined to stand by you through evil and good report Untill you accomplish the grcal work of liberty and Independence. We know how lo appreciate the character of a brave generous and magnanimous enemy, and had our friends fallen in
