l>alace of the National Government, Mexico, July 8, 1836. The undersigned, acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, has the honor lo address the honorable Powhatan Ellis, in order to make known to him that the attention of his Government has been called to a11 annunciation which appears in a periodical of the United States, entitled "lhe Natchez Courier," by which the American General Gaines, who is on the frontier of Lhis republic, has received orders from his Government lo advance immediately upon Nacogdoches with all his disposable force; and that, in consequence thereof, he has taken ste.ps lo procure the necessary carriages for transporting his provisions. As il is presumed that Mr. Ellis is acquainted with this measure, which affects the integrity of the Mexican territory, within which the said post of Nacogdoches is unquestionably located, the Supreme Government does not doubt that his excellency will Lake upon himself to give those explanations which will hold good in Lhe case; and the undersigned avails himself of the present opporl'unity to reiterate lo him the assurances of his very distinguished consideration.
