111 fulfilment of the duties which a puLlic man o,vcs to his nulivc country and lo honor, I came lo lhis soil al lhe ltead of six thousand mcxicans. The disasters of war, which circumstances rendered i11cvilable, have reduced me lo the situation of a prisoner, in which l still remain, as you will no doubt have been informed. The good disposition manifested hy Don Samuel Houston, Commander-in-chief of the Tcxian Army, for terminating the war, and by his Successor, D011 Thomas J. Rusk; the determination of the President and Cabinet lo make an ho11orablc arrnngeme11t between the conlendi11g parties, and my conviction; have given rise to the Agreements, of which I annex copies, as also of the orders issued by me lo General Filisola, my Second in command, for him Lo retire with the remainder of lhc mexicar, Army, from this river Brazos, where he then was, lo the other siclc of the river Bravo del Norte. As lhcre was no doubt that General Filisola would scrupulously fulfil all that part which rclalcd to him, the President and Cabinet had taken measures for my return lo Mexico, to enable me Lo complete the other stipulations and I had, in consequence, embarked on board the Schooner Invincible, which was to convey me to the Port of Vera Cru~; l>ul, il unfortunately happened, that some indiscreet persons raised a tumult, which obliged the Authorities forcibly lo laud me and again to place me in close confinement. Thal incident prevented my arriv,11 al t\lcxico, since the beginning or last month, which has induced that Government, ignorant, no doubt, of what had occurred, to lake the command of the Army from General Filisola, ordering Genl. Urrea to whom the command has been givcu, lo go 011 with his operations, in virtue of which, Lhe latter General is now nl the river Nueces, according to last accounts. In vain have some men of l'orcsigh I and wdl-di~posetl, endeavoured to show the necessity of rcprcs:-ing the pai-sion~ and
