Your commurucalion notifying me of the appointment of Mirabeau B Lamar as Major -General together with his order were both received in Camp yesterday lo which by the bye I could have taken butoneexception and that was the time at which it was made was calculated to have an unfavorable operation on me individual I pass by the laconick manner in which the notification was made lo me and in fact all other matters so far as 1 am concerned myself for If I have been disappointed in any thing since my reluctant acceptance of the office of Brig Gent that I have escaped with less censure than I had anticipated on Staking myself up at the critical moment I did to be shot at in every direction My only object upon Lhe present occasion -is to draw your attention to the critical Situation which the Country occupies al present and particularly the critical Situation which all of us who have the misfortune (for I consider it one) to hold office now sustain before the World Not only the fate hut the honor of Texas depends now upon the united efforts of officers and people General Lamar has the confidence of the men composing this Army he is nol only highly thought of but very highly spoken of by all and on hearing the news I had fondly hoped that no difficulties would occur but lo my great astonish- ment the officers and men protest against his appointment they Consider iL as an unceremonious interfering of the Cabinet with the affairs of the Army an<l throws us at this very critical juncture into a Situation which I fear will be productive of no good the Cabinet must from the course of conduct which they have pursued towards me have very erroneously taken up the idea that I was pursuing a coursr. of conduct calculated to operate upon the prospects on popularity Nothing is mon~ unfounded I have had but one single object since as1>uming the Command and thal ha5 been to place the
